Theories about direct dietary influences on acne are quite controversial in the medical literature. An example is the theories that implicate chocolate are conflicting. What we do know is providing the best nutrition for the skin is critical. In addition to a generally healthful diet some specifics are helpful. All refined and/or concentrated simple sugars should be eliminated from the diet. (I know very challenging for the average American diet). Foods containing trans -fatty acids or oxidized fatty acids should also be avoided. Good news is more thumbs up for high protein diets. In one study, subjects fed a high protein diet showed substantially less conversion of testosterone to its more potent form (DHT). A high carbohydrate diet showed the opposite results. These results suggest that a low carb high protein diet may help with acne (not to mention hair loss). Every wondered why we have so much adult acne and thinning hair even in women…? Too much refined carbs, not enough of the good fats and protein.
Many dermatologists have reported that the hormone insulin is effective in the treatment of acne. Insulin regulates blood sugar by promoting the uptake of sugar by the cells aka the fat storage hormone. Research has demonstrated that patients with acne do not metabolize sugar properly as evidenced by levels of glucose in the skin cells compared to control groups. Some researchers have gone as far as to refer to acne as skin diabetes.
Correcting an underlying thyroid problem can also help in reducing acne.
